So near, so far

Last night
I dreamed of you
once more

Reaching out
my subconscious
took me on a journey

Not to visit you
but to wander and to enjoy
that beautiful place
you call home

The urge
to get in touch
and tell you
I would be so near
(for some unknown reason)
hung
in the air

Then I woke
and realised
what had been so real
was just another dream

You are as far away as ever.

About roughseasinthemed

I write about my life as an English person living in Spain and Gibraltar, on Roughseas, subjects range from politics and current developments in Gib to book reviews, cooking and getting on with life. My views and thoughts on a variety of topics - depending on my mood of the day - can be found over on Clouds. A few pix are over on Everypic - although it is not a photoblog. And of course my dog had his own blog, but most of you knew that anyway. Pippadogblog etc

Some people like to dream, I however don’t because of thoughts such as this.. I wake and feel empty..

    • Thanks L. It was literally last night’s dream and as ever, was so real. And this morning – so flat and strange. I don’t like dreaming but I sure as hell can’t stop it 😦

I’d love to know where dreams come from, and why we dream what we do, but you’ve expressed that feeling of void on waking so well in your verse.

    • Some are obvious aren’t they? I would often dream about work problems, to the extent that I used to dream I had the most horrific forms of cancer 😦 Dreaming about coping with bad meetings was a piece of cake compared with that.

This one, was someone I used to know. I wasn’t going to visit them, just where they lived. As I said, there was no reason for me going there. But it was so real. And I just didn’t know whether to get in touch with them or not.

Anyway, my father used to dream to order. His favourite holiday was one we’d had in Cornwall, so he’d happily drift off to sleep and dream of the beautiful countryside down there. Apparently he’d wanted to retire there but – my mother didn’t want to leave Yorkshire. Sad that I think. I only discovered that after he’d died. And it would have been far more convenient for us travelling back from Spain to Plymouth I must say!

How amazing to be able to dream to order, the only problem would be waking up, and knowing you’d get the flat empty feeling that waking from a good dream leaves you with.

I’ve had some totally weird dreams in the past, to the extent, on waking when they were still vivid in my mind, I had a book beside the bed to write them down. I dont seem to get them anymore, though I do still have the book somewhere.

I used to have a recurring dream as a child, where I’d be floating down on a parachute, I’d get shot in my back, which is when I’d wake up, with a sharp pain where I’d been ‘shot’. This dream ended, when, at the age of sixteen, on a coach holiday to Austria, I had a real case of deja vu as we entered a small village.

        • How strange. My childhood one was of being chased down a green tunnel (you know, the country roads where the trees overhang to meet in a middle) by a frightening person dressed in black leathers on a motorbike. That stopped too, but I don’t remember when.

Perhaps dreaming to order is gender based – A managed to have one dream with 20 Scandinavian women all dutifully lining up to have sex with him…… (in turn, not at once!)

I rarely have a peaceful night’s sleep without a stupid dream. That’s probably why I always feel tired – I do more at night than I do during the day 😀

Interesting how one person’s poems & dreams can be interpreted & meaningful to others. Your poem took me on a journey, as a dream would do. I think they come from the same subconscious place and make their way into our conscious because they have a message for us…

    • Maybe they do. Maybe our sensible thinking self tries to tell us what we need to do while we sleep. It’s just the messages are a bit confusing!

I missed out the bit about my anticipation of dancing on the soft green grass, feeling the luxury of the verdant rolling green countryside etc etc as it would have got too long – I can’t do long poems. But that was such a part of it too.

I can only focus on one aspect though and I went for the dilemma of – do I contact this old friend or not?

Sounds a bit like your subconscious is missing out on the UK countryside.
I have to admit, whenever we’d been on holiday to hotter countries, I always used to love the sight of the rolling green hills on our return home.
Has Pippa got a passport? You know you’re all welcome here anytime 🙂

        • Yes, I’ll admit to missing the countryside and my Rayburn 😀

I do think the UK, well specifically England and Scotland, are among the most beautiful countries I have ever lived/visited. But I love where I live now too 🙂

Pippa couldn’t travel between Spain and Gib without one!! And now the restrictions from the UK have been lifted it would be easier too.

Thanks, that’s a lovely and generous offer – but I’m not cycling 30 miles with T!!

  4. How about a burning need to visit some English pubs and sample fresh pressed cider, that would do for me as an excuse!!
The poem (thought you couldn’t do poetry?) is sublime, thanks for sharing.
Dreams are just another reality that seem to be designed, in my case, to either remind me of sad / terrifying things from the past or to help squeeze a few more hours of work into the day!!

I like this one. It touches on the dreamlike senses. Very well done. 🙂

    • Thanks Kev. A couple of years ago, I seemed to wake up with dreams and words spilling out so thought I might as well try them out. These days I don’t have any dreamy-type dreams. Just about what I need to be doing at the moment. Too tedious for words 😀
